Background to Sunak’s cabinet reshuffle

With a general election due by January 2025 and the Conservatives trailing in the polls, appointments to the latest Rishi Sunak cabinet suggest the prime minister had an eye on centrist voters in what may be his final opportunity to shake up his top team ahead of the campaign.

The reshuffle kicked off in the morning with confirmation of the sacking of Braverman following a series of controversial remarks, including criticism of the Metropolitan Police.

Soon after, Number 10 appointed James Cleverly as the new Home Secretary, a more moderate figure, after just over one year as Foreign Secretary. In the most surprising Rishi Sunak cabinet appointment of the day, Cameron was then named to fill the vacant spot at the head of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, a challenging position with conflicts raging in Ukraine and the Middle East. He was also made a peer in the House of Lords to enable him to carry out his ministerial duties, raising questions about parliamentary scrutiny.
