As Europe advances its green agenda, the question of how to deliver climate-resilient, affordable housing has moved to the top of the EU policy agenda. On 2 June 2025, the European Parliament’s Special Committee on the Housing Crisis (HOUS) convened a public hearing to explore the challenges and opportunities of making housing both sustainable and socially inclusive.
This high-level debate brought together EU policymakers, industry leaders, architects, and researchers to address key issues including:
- Reforming cement and construction standards
- Promoting biophilic and community-rooted urban design
- Tackling energy poverty through inclusive renovation strategies
- Cutting red tape in permitting processes
- Aligning EU-level ambition with local capacity and citizen needs
