Finland’s key EU priorities

Report by Milja Liinanotko

Finland has outlined its key EU policy priorities through letters sent to the European Commissioners-designate for the 2024–2029 term.

In these letters, the Finnish government promotes improving comprehensive security in the European Union, namely through support for Ukraine, preparedness, defence cooperation, and securing external borders. Finland advocates strengthening strategic competitiveness through a robust single market, a clean transition with a circular economy and bioeconomy, and the 90% net emission reduction target for 2040. The Finnish government also emphasises the Rule of Law as a foundational principle for all EU actions and calls for the EU’s next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) to reflect these objectives. Each letter, signed by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and other ministers, highlights these priorities, along with tailored aspects for each Commissioner’s specific portfolio.
